ITINERARY

DAY 1 - Auckland

We meet our Tour Manager in Auckland and take a sightseeing tour including walking to the top of MT EDEN, an extinct Volcano, where we learn about the geography of Auckland and the 48 volcanoes spread through New Zealand’s largest city. Later we have a speedy ride to the top of the SKYTOWER for great views of the city before arriving at our accommodation in the centre of Auckland for a home cooked dinner. (D)

DAY 2- Auckland to Tongariro National Park

We travel to Mystical Waitomo and take a BOAT TRIP through the famous GLOW WORM CAVES and learn about these amazing creatures and the history of the caves. Travelling south to the Tongariro National Park and into ‘Volcano’ territory with a visit to the DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION VISITOR CENTRE where we view audiovisuals on park geology. Look out for scenes from the first Lord of the Rings movie and inspect lava flows from previous eruptions. (B/D)

DAY 3- Hike the Tongariro Crossing

The world famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing track is an awesome one day adventure, we across spectacular and unique volcanic terrain. Our guide will point out cold mountain springs, old lava flows, active craters and thermal steam vents. We see the brilliant emerald and blue lakes, special alpine flora and fauna and have magnificent views of the mountains and lakes of the central North Island with time to enjoy beautiful native forest as we walk to the finish. DAY 4

We spend the morning working as volunteers on the Mountain to Sea cycle trail, this is not for the faint hearted but your contribution to this trail will be very much appreciated by the Ruapehu locals. Later we travel north to Taupo. Our first visit is to the Taupo Bungy site over the beautiful Waikato River. Your choice to try if you dare! Some free time later this afternoon before we soak off the day’s excitement in the fabulous De Brett’s Mineral pools and spa. (B/D)

DAY 5- Taupo – Rotorua

We take in the amazing views of thunderous HUKA FALLS enroute to view the opening of the ARATIATIA Dam, one of eight dams on the Waikato River. Hot springs, steaming ground and volcanic craters are all included in our next stop the Wai o Tapu Thermal wonderland. See the world famous Champagne pool and boiling mud on your walk through the park. This afternoon we visit RAINBOW SPRINGS starting with Kiwi Encounter a successful kiwi conservation centre where over 1,000 kiwis have been released into the wild after being hatched at the centre. Later we explore the aviaries, feed the birds their breakfast, come face to face with pre-history in the eyes of tuatara, talk to Jenny the hand-reared kea, see the largest wild trout you will ever see and experience the wonder of the bird show featuring some funny feathered performers. We also have time to experience the adrenalin rush of The Big Splash We travel onto Rotorua and tonight after dinner of your choice we enjoy a New Zealand movie. (B)

DAY 6- Rotorua

First up this morning we take to the Kaituna River for a fantastic WHITE WATER RAFTING adventure. We travel over 3 small waterfalls before taking on the highest rafted waterfall in the Southern hemisphere 7 metres tall. Once we have recovered we travel to Zorb for an optional and very strange ride down the hill, Tonight ENJOY AN EVENING OF CULTURAL ENTERTAINMENT and a traditional Hangi (dinner cooked in an Earth oven) at one of Rotorua’s top attractions. DAY 7- Rotorua

A free day today to try some of the many optional activities available, Tree Canopy, Agroventures, Skydiving or perhaps taking a helicopter ride over the volcanic valleys and lakes.

Tonight we enjoy a typical kiwi dinner of Fish n Chips followed by a famous New Zealand ice cream cone. (B/D)

DAY 8- Rotorua - Auckland

We travel back to Auckland stopping at Hobbiton where we take a tour through the MOVIE SET of the HOBBIT AND LORD OF THE RINGS. See the ‘Green Dragon’, touch the ‘Magic tree’, sit in a ‘hobbit house’ and learn about the making of the film on our exclusive tour. Later we travel on to Auckland airport where we say a fond farewell to our Tour Manager and Driver and connect with our flight home. (B)
