Dunedin City Sights

Dunedin

Your Dunedin experience begins with this one-hour introduction tour to life and times in this 'city of firsts'. Scottish Presbyterian settlers arrived here in 1848 and the incorporation of the City Council in 1865 was the first in New Zealand. Dunedin also lays claim to NZ's first University, first girls' high school, first chocolate factory, first public botanic gardens, first daily newspaper, first cable car public transport, first kerosene street-lighting and first public art gallery. The first telephone call in New Zealand was also made here and we include the world's steepest street, Baldwin St, on the tour. In the 19th century, Dunedin was a progressive and vibrant centre of NZ's commerce, culture and education.

Double Deck Bus Tour plus Olveston guided tour

Dunedin

This intimate experience of the life of an affluent Dunedin family in the early years of the 20th century perfectly complements your double deck bus tour. In 1904 David Theomin, one of Dunedin's most successful businessmen, commissioned his stately home. Since the death of his daughter Dorothy in 1966, the home has been faithfully preserved under a trust deed. The experience is authentic from the treasures collected during the family's extensive travels to the crockery and cutlery that were used by the family and the kitchen utensils used by the servants. Disembarking from the double deck bus tour at its halfway point you will be taken on a guided tour of Olveston and then you rejoin the bus on its next circuit to complete your tour. You can add the Olveston guided tour to the 9am, 1pm or 2:15pm double deck tours.

Otago Peninsula, Albatross Centre, Nest Site & Fort Taiaroa

Dunedin

Settle back and enjoy the spectacular drive up and over the Peninsula 'high road', offering spectacular views out over the Pacific Ocean on one side and the beautiful Otago harbour on the other. Halfway down the peninsula we arrive at Larnach Castle where you'll be taken into the castle grounds for a photo opportunity of this imposing 19th century grand home before we continue over the beautiful back road of the peninsula. Your driver will keep you entertained with local folklore and interesting geographic and historic information about this area which was once scattered with Maori villages and inhabited by the largest bird in the world, the Moa, unfortunately now extinct. On arrival at the Taiaroa headland, an historic Maori site, you will be taken into the Royal Albatross Centre. Here you will experience a talk and video on the life of the royal albatross, go on a guided visit to the observatory overlooking the albatross nesting colony and then be taken on a guided tour into the tunnels of historic Fort Taiaroa to see the Armstrong 'disappearing gun'. Note the nest site is closed from Sept 17 to Nov 23rd incl. During this period the video, talk and visit to the Fort are still operating at a reduced cost.

Otago Peninsula, Albatross Centre & Natures Wonders Wildlife Safari

On arrival at the albatross centre you will have time for a brief wander around the exhibits on display and, on a favourable windy day, you may see an albatross flying overhead. Then we continue around the headland to the Reid family farm. Here you'll board an eight-wheeler all terrain vehicle for an exhilarating ride taking in the spectacular scenery and authentic farm life as you descend down to Penguin beach, a truly natural wonder. Colonies of the very rare yellow-eyed penguins, little blue penguins, NZ fur seals and cliff dwelling cormorants all live in harmony and in their natural environment. Lookout hides are strategically located around the beach-front to balance your viewing experience with privacy for the wildlife to ensure that you are seeing them going about their normal daily lives.

You will also be given a talk on the life of this rare species. This option does not include a visit to the albatross colony.
